How to make a trifle

sherry trifle

A trifle is a delicious and wondrous thing.  It contains custard, sherry, fruit and jelly.  The following trifle is a store cupboard trifle, so no having to make your own custard or chop the fruit.   This trifle is so very tasty and very quick to construct.

You will need:-

A packet of trifle sponges – available from most supermarkets in the baking isle

A packet of strawberry or raspberry jelly

A tin of peaches, fruit cocktail (this is best) or raspberries (drain and mix the juice into the jelly)

Some sherry – preferably sweet – about 3 tablespoons

A tin or packet of ready made custard

Some flaked almonds (about a handful)

A couple of dessert spoonfuls of strawberry or raspberry jam

How to make:-

Place the sponges in the bottom of a large bowl – it is up to you how many you use but break them up a bit

Slosh on about 3 tablespoons of the sherry and let this soak into the sponge

Add a couple of dessertspoons of the jam and spread over the sponge mixture

Drain the fruit from its juice and add to the bowl

Boil a kettle and make the jelly from the instructions on the packet, using the juice from the tin of fruit as part of the cold water

When the jelly has cooled add it to the mixture

Put in the fridge to set

Add the custard on top, pipe some double cream in splodges on top of the custard

Sprinkle with a handful of flaked almonds.  Leave in the fridge until ready to serve
